Dr Alan Rankin

FFSEM(UK), MBBChBAO, MRCS(Ire), MSc(SEM), PGDip SEM/MSKUSS, Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine, Medical Director SMNI

Dr Rankin has over 15 years’ experience in Sports & Exercise Medicine.  In addition to Musculoskeletal injuries, Dr Rankin has expertise in other areas of Sports Medicine such as Concussion and RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport). As well as his duties with SMNI, Dr Rankin works as a Sports Physician with the Sports NI Sports Institute.  He has extensive experience of working with national and international sporting teams and events and was most recently the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the Team Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics and Medical Officer with Team NI at the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Dr Rankin is the current Northern Ireland Regional Representative for the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK.

Gareth Robinson

Extensive experience and interest in the management of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction which has included 20 years in full time professional sport. Subsequently 5 years working with the elite player pathway in international football. Currently managing a varied patient caseload within the clinic and leading the physiotherapy rehabilitation service of the concussed athlete.

I have been practicing physiotherapy for over 13 years following completion of Physiothary BSc and Sports & Exercise Medicine MSc. Previous to my role in Sports Medicine NI I worked in the NHS for 10 years and completed 3 years as a First Contact Practitioner in a GP’s surgery prior to going full time in to private practice.

I have travelled to Australia where I spent 18 months as a part time physiotherapist with the Sydney Swans AFL academy while also working in a sport’s injury clinic working with elite and international athletes of different sports.

During my career I have been involved with many GAA and soccer teams and I am  currently active Head Physiotherapist for Antrim GAA football.

I have had underage national level experience where I was a physiotherapist for 3 years within the IFA Northern Ireland soccer u13-16 teams.

I am also a qualified and have a keen interest in Strength and Conditioning where I currently undertake testing and programming for several GAA clubs throughout Ulster and also Irish league players.

I’ve worked across a number of dynamic private clinics which have focused on Musculoskeletal and Sports injury management, but also have had experience in orthopaedic and occupational physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

More recently my work with the Senior Womens National Squad involved leading the physiotherapy department in the full time programme leading up to the Womens Euro’s in 2022.

I graduated from University of Ulster in 2021 with first class honours. I have over 2 years experience of working in a hospital environment gaining experience in a wide range of specialisms including musculoskeletal treatments, trauma and orthopaedics and respiratory.

 

I have worked with athletes at an elite level for a number of years. Having completed at a junior international level I understand the need for thorough rehab, facilitating a return to play and the importance of injury prevention.

Lorna has been a qualified Dietitian since 2005 and is one of NI’s most renowned Sports Performance Nutritionists, with over 10 years’ experience working with elite athletes in the Sports Institute Northern Ireland and SMNI in Belfast.

Lorna’s ‘food first’ approach equips elite athletes with the knowledge of how to improve their performance through diet.  Lorna has a wealth of knowledge about nutritional issues relevant to high performance sport and athletes and her advice has helped many athletes reach their full potential in the sporting arena.
